Waking every hour at night. Lock Rss

Our son Michael is now 5 and a half months old. Some nights he sleeps okay, in 4 or five hour blocks, but other nights he wakes every hour.

We have tried everything including controlled comforting, putting him to sleep earlier and these things helped a little.

Every second or third day though he falls back into his routine of waking every hour during the night.

He has a dummy at night and he drops it from his mouth when he sleeps. When he wakes up we let him cry for a couple of minutes to see if he will resettle himself but if he continues we go into his room careful not to make too much noise and try to shoosh him back to sleep. This never really works so we end up giving him the dummy and he goes straight back to sleep, only to wake up an hour later!

Can you offer any advice how we can solve this problem or why he does it only sometimes?

Hi Mary,
It sounds like Michael is associating sleep with the dummy, and you would be well advised to do away with it altogether. I think you would really benefit from trying our techniques on the sleep page, with previous attempts you may have missed some vital steps, watching the DVD would probably help quite a bit, at 51/2 months if Michael is advanced you could try the 6 to 12 month techniques.
