When to drop the day sleep? Lock Rss

My son is 2 and 4 months, and over the last few weeks, he has been fighting the day sleep. Some days he will have a sleep, and other days he will keep fighting it until I get him up. He still sleeps in a cot, and doesn't seem interested in sleeping in a bed at this stage.

When he doesn't have a sleep during the day, he is very tired in the evenings, and ends up being quite difficult until we put him to sleep. He usually goes to sleep at 7-7.30 pm when he doesn't have a day sleep.

When he does have a sleep during the day, he doesn't want to go to bed until 8-8.30 pm, but he is much happier.

He can still wake in the night either way, but usually goes straight back to sleep after being resettled.

When should we drop the day sleep?
What sort of routine should we put in place to help him cope without a day sleep?
Should we keep pushing him to have a sleep? If so, until when?
How much sleep does a 2 and a half year old need?

Thank you,

SA, 2 boys

Hi Mel,
This is about the age when toddlers start to not need their day sleep but the transition can be a bit trying sometimes.

Just watch for tired signs and be guided by these. Some days he will have the sleep and other days not need it. On the days when he does not sleep have an earlier dinner for him so he doesn’t fall asleep in his plate. At 21/2 bed at 7pm and up at 7am would be ideal.

Cheers Maree
