Birth Defects Rss

My bubby has a ventricular heart defect, it is a small hole between the two chambers of the heart. This was picked up at 16w and confirmed at 20w scan by heart specialist. The rest of the heart is perfectly normal.

Just wondered if anyone else is in this situation or been in.

Thanks

not sure exactly what heart condition I had but it was called wolf parkinson white syndrome It Diagnosed til I was 21 I had it from birth, I just remember dr saying I had a little hole in my heart but I have had 3 kids since it was fixed by surgery

My youngest son has a Congenital Heart Defect which was picked up when he was 9 days old. He has an arrythmia problem (Supraventricular Tachycardia) and I know there are other mums here on Huggies that have CHD kids. There are so many CHD's and variations of each condition that it's hard to direct you to any relevant information without the actual diagnosis....and that can't sometimes be definite until after bub is born.

One thing I do recommend you do is go to HeartKids and read through the information on CHD's they have there. They also have links to many pages with information as well as the contact details for HeartKids in each state. It's free to join HeartKids ...they are a family support and advocacy group....and the support they provide is invaluable. HeartKids also have Facebook pages for most states with many more links to information, as well as heaps of other FB pages dedicated to CHD's.

I wish you all the best with the rest of your pregnancy and for the journey you are about to embark on. Having a child with a heart condition can be a rocky journey but it can also be filled with lots of fun.

Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome is actually an arrythmia condition....very similar to SVT...major difference is WPWS have an extra connection in the heart and SVT (or PSVT) is a conduction issue. You must have had a hole as well as the WPWS....the surgeons can do a small procedure to cut the extra connection with WPWS. Did they tell you if they repaired the hole or left it?

My oldest son has this along with other pretty complicated things going on. Have they told you bub will be blue? I'm pretty sure it's this part of the defect that causes the blue tinge on my son, as the hole makes the blue and red blood mix together. Unfortunately my son hasn't been fixed yet, because the other steps that had to be taken before fixing the VSD have failed. But if this is an isolated problem in your bub, they can fix the problem quite easily these days I have been told by cardiologists.
Good luck, I know it's scarey, but with a good cardiologist and surgeon I'm sure bub will be just fine smile

Hi ladies,

We just got home from 7 weeks in hospital with our baby. She had an undiagnosed CHD and has had a really rough start to life including 2 open heart surgeries before she was a week old. My advice would be to read up on all the info you can about you bubs condition and support services you may need after cos once bub is here it will be full on with all the medical stuff.

Our bub also had Ventricular septal defect along with several other issues and the surgeons said that part of the surgery was quite routine and straight forward so hopefully that will be the same for your bub.

I am wondering if any other mums of heart babies have had trouble with feeding and if anyone has any tips??? We are trying to breast feed but still using nasal gastric tube for top ups nearly every feed cos she can't seem to latch/suck/swallow properly.

Good luck with all your heart bubs ladies!
