  5. tongue tie... not sure what to do

tongue tie... not sure what to do Lock Rss

my 10 day old has a tongue tie and we're not sure if we should get it snipped now or leave it until she's older as it may never actually cause any issues.

she's feeding fine..she can slip off a little bit but I just reattach. she's putting on weight and my nipples are fine too. so its not a severe tie, though she cant use a dummy at all as she cant lift her little tongue that high, and the nurse said that it 'might' cause hygiene and speech issues when she's older, but then again it night not trouble her at all.

so im unsure what to do..should we get it snipped now so its never going to be an issue and when the procedure is less traumatic, or wait to see if its an issue and risk having to get it snipped when shes around 3 yrs which would obviously be much more distressing for her and the risk of infection is much higher too.

I just cant bring myself to cut a part of my baby girls body as a precaution..it actually horrifies me =( anyone have experience with this issue?
I'd be inclined to cut if it was affecting breast feeding, but as you say, you are feeding well so may be fine to leave it. Sometimes they break themselves, sometimes not which can cause speech problems, but I think that is rare. My ds2 had a tongue tie which we got cut when ds2 was just under a week old which was the best decision because bf was painful until then. smile

+1

My DD had tongue tie too - I was in absolute agony bf. She had hers cut when she was about 2 weeks and then it was all smooth sailing after that. Good luck with your decision
If they are older they have to go under a general and have it cut via lazer surgery. my DS1 had his done that way as it was picked up late and was causing major issues. Had some minor issues with DS2 and his tongue tie, got it snipped at 2 weeks and it was such a non-issue procedure.

DS3 and DS4 also both had tongue ties but both were very minor and caused no issues so we didn't bother having their cut. We're yet to see if it will impact their speaking or not.

Maybe get several specialist opinions and go from there?

My DD has a very slight tongue tie and I saw several doctors who all said it was not likely to be a problem. I've not had any problems feeding (she's 11 weeks old) and yesterday she actually stuck her tongue all the way out at me so I think she's ok.

Good luck and hopefully you don't have to have it snipped. smile
thanks for all the replies. sorry I have taken so long to respond. it sounds like it must not be a very severe tie as I have no pain feeding at all and her latch is good and getting better (as it does once theyre a few weeks old) she has no trouble draining the breast and she stuck her tongue out yesterday too. I don't think ill need it cut...the community nurse wasn't pushy about it, she just said to see what the Dr says at our 6wk check (I get ours done at my GP for me and bub at 6-8weeks) but id imagine if theres no feeding issues it wouldn't affect speech..?
