Large family Lock Rss

I have 6 children ranging in age from 11 to 7months. I love having a large family although I do have my moments when I feel as if I must be absolutely insane!

I receive so much negativity from other people - not only family and friends, but stangers as well. I could not begin to count the number of times I have heard "you're not going to have any more are you?" Or people telling me just how insane I must be.

I can't understand why people feel like they have to say anything negative to me about my choice. I feel that I am very lucky to have been able to have 6 beautiful healthy children. We don't ask anyone else to help us with the cost of raising them or to look after them (except in dire emergencies).

I would love to hear from other mums with more than the average number of children.
Hi Fellow Large family Mum!! I have (only) 4 children - not 6 like you, but are considered a large family by today's standards. I am often asked by people "You must be mad", or "How do you do it?" and things like that. My favourite question is the VERY old "Do you know what causes them yet?". Very funny the first time you hear it - not so funny by the 75th. We are also a financially self-sufficient family who manages well enough with careful budgeting and creative ideas for fun. We try to be as organised as possible and keep on top of things. My kids are pretty well behaved, polite and lovable kids and people do often remark on how good they are after they get over the shock of how many of them walk into their shops or surgeries etc! They all play well, most of the time, and are always garanteed of a playmate. We feel incredibly blessed to have our beautiful babies, too, and are looking forward to a future of lots of extended family and grandbabies! Anyway - well done to mums with large families - you certainly know you're alive with so many kids! I wouldn't change it for the world.

i aint a large family

we are very blessed with one child, (been trying for more but no lucky as yet).

me and my fiance are both the only children and we want a large family we want three but we'll see what happens. i'd really like 4.

i envy you, barb031. you are lucky to be able to have them. they are beautiful i could not imagine living my life without a child.. my daughter is my breath of life on my miserable days, she helps my spirit and i love her more than i possibly thought i could love another.

congradulations on your 6 children. you must have a lot of love to give and also recieve and i do really envy you.

send pics if you'd like [email protected]

large familys are way more blessed than the smaller ones... but thats my opinion.

they say negative things because there is no way they could do what you do.

gee wizz 150 yrs ago six was considered average.

as the saying goes
god only gives a person what they can handle.
more power to ya. smile

Well said, Chelby. God doesn't give us more than we can handle. As for average families - it really wasn't that long ago that 4-6 would have been very normal. My Dad was one of fourteen children - 7 boys, 7 girls, with only one set of (non-identical ) twins. The twins are my Dad and his sister. This was definately a big family but quite normal in those days, especially out in the bush where they came from. It wasn't until my Nanna's 11th baby, that they had electricity connected as a surprise for her when she got out of hospital. We worked out once, that she spent 11 years of her life pregnant! Amazing woman. I have the closest, loving and connected family, and am very close to many of my 49 cousins on that side of the family - I'm number 20! We had to hire a whole convention centre for our family reunion a couple of years ago - fantastic fun. No doubt there are many more pressures, economically and time-wise these days, but it is funny that with all the modern conveniences and luxuries we have today, we are having less children.

i am the 1st of 4 . mum had us all in 5 yrs. and she is one of 4 so its pretty normal to me to be part of a big family.
but theres both good and bad sides to everything

Thanks for the replies. I do have a lot of people say to me that they wouldn't be able to cope with 6 kids. As I say to them .. they would if they had to. I mean, what else could you do? When you have 6 little people totally reliant on you, you can't just say this is too hard and I can't do it.

What really saddens me is that the last two times I fell pregnant, when I told people the most common response was "what are you going to do". Like as if there is an option. None of our children were ever 'planned'. Each was a lovely little surprise and never once did we ever stop for even a second and question if we would have the baby.

My life does get tough, and I have my moments when I just want to sit down and cry and wonder how I am going to continue, but then all I have to do is look at any one of my children and I know that what I'm doing is worth it.

good luck on trying for your 2nd. Don't give up!!

Would you believe that when I was 20 I suffered my 2nd misscarriage. I lost both my babies at 4 and a half months pregnant. After the second one, I was told by the specialist at the hospital that I would not be able to have a baby.

Well didn't I show them!! So never give up trying .... it will happen when you least expect it.

yeah we feel very blessed to have eilish so we are just taking it as it comes. we've been trying for about 18 months now. we believe it will happen when someone believes we are truly ready for it or when we give up and to suprise us.. LOL

aww sorry about the miscarriages *HUGS*

what are the sexs of your children and their full names? if you dont wanna you dont have to tell me, some people dont like giving out personal details.

dont listen to them people who are negative they are just jealous. you are truly blessed stuff em all.

or scare them and say that you're giving them all up for adoption or something... LOL some people just have no idea...

good luck

hi barb031,
i too have a large family 2 step children and 3 of my own they all live with us.
4 boys and 1 girl their ages range from 14 through to 17 months.

2 of the boys have adhd which is very trying somtimes but we manage the 17 month old has sleep apnia, lactose intolerance and has asthma and other illneses

i too get so many remarks on how many children i have and i still want more (i have plenty of love to give)they all say i must be mad and my family keep going on,on the amount of children i have,i dont know what their problems are as we dont ask for any help unless its an emergency my children are always well dressed they get new clothes all the time and i also love going op shopping as you find some really great clothes their. the kids love seeing what i have bought them next,

i consider my stepchildren as my own and treat them no differant to my children they all know they are loved although it may take a while for every one to be herd but we eventually get there.

any one with a large family good luck as the snide remarks sometimes make you see red just ignore them as we know we are surrounded by love

seonee =) xoxo

p.s just wondering if any one of you have had troubles getting rental propities in vic becouse of a large family most landlords say they would prefere animals over children (how fair is that)

(sony) mother and stepmother to five children

We are not in Victoria, and are not needing to find a rental home, but I have heard of this happening. On the side of the homeowners, though, my parents have an investment property here in Brisbane and recently let it out through a government agency to a Foster care family. Well, six months later the place is trashed. Holes in walls, light fittings smashed, doors with holes and off their hinges, garden dead and destroyed, a shed full of broken furniture etc, etc etc. For investment home owners who have worked hard all their lives to own a property to rent out and one day live in in retirement, this has been just infuriating and devastating. They have been quoted over $6000 in damages and are only going to recoup about two-thirds of that thru the Govt agency. I know that there are many deserving and house-proud families out there, but these few people ruin it for everyone. You really can't blame my parents for their response - no way will they have a family with a heap of kids in their house again.
