How old before kids can take themselves to school Rss

Fruchoc - what state are you in? Travel to school should be covered by the gov & free - or at least subsidised to an affordable rate. Have you looked into it - you probably have cause you a smart lady - but it just seems strange to me. DS has a bus pass & a train pass & we only live 2.9 km from his school.

hi smile i was in qld previously and for us to recieve free bus travel you had to attend the closest school and you had to be a certain distance from the school... the town bus service charged too.

i think she is in SA?

I think generally it depends on distance and where you live. We are not too far from the school, but my kids would have to cross an uncontrolled double lane intersection so they won't be going on their own for some time. They have been wanting to go on the bus which I'm just coming around to the idea of, so may look into that soon. Our school bus has kindy (4yo) on it. They have someone to meet them when they arrive at school and then in the afternoon the teachers assistant escorts them to the bus too.
In a year or so if we are still at mil's i would let bil (who will be year 7 and same school when DD start school) take DD to school on the odd occasion as it's only a street away and 5 minutes max. We live in a small town though. If we are in the same town i would let DD go by herself at 10 and if we lived a small distance from the school.
I live 5 doors up from the school DD will be attending year after next and even tho it is straight there, there is an intersection with a roundabout to cross and it only gets busy at school time, so i will definately be walking her, maybe i will consider her going on her own when she's about 10, i think its more other people i dont trust rather than her.

My 13yr old niece has only just started catching the bus to and from school this year (1st yr high school) and my sister drops her 10yr old daughter to school and she catches the bus from school to her dad's school.

I am in SA. The school bus is owned by DD's school, so its not a public transport one.

we dont have a walk to school option ,one of the schools is 7km away, the other about 10km in the opposite direction. My boys have been catching the bus for a few years now.One goes straight to school the other has 1 change.I take and pick them up 1-2 times per week(trying to save time and petrol). If the school was within walking ditance they would be walking now or biking it.To answer your question from 8-9 years would be fine imo

mum of 3 boys aged 11, 13 and 14

I think a lot depends where people live and the child too. My eldest has always been quite responsible, my youngest is not so much so lol, so I think if walking or catching the bus to school was an option, my boys would both be ready at different ages anyway.

I wish we lived closer to our kids school though so walking or riding their bike to school WAS an option when they got a bit bigger sad

Thanks for all the replies. Lots of variances in everyone's replies wink
The official recommendation is that children need to hold an adults hand to cross the road until they are 10 years old. I think that is a pretty good age. Depends of course on distance, highways, area etc...

My sister works in the media... she says, not a month goes by where she is sent AT LEAST two media releases or more ( a month ) from the police, about attempted child abductions.
These are attempts on children up to 15 years of age, who are usually walking to and from school.... SO scary. I don't think I'll ever let my kid walk to school on their own.

WOW that is interesting

As is the comment about kids not being ready to cross a road on their own till 10 :S
